You guys, there is no definite “This is what this song is about, and there’s no other way around it.” Don Henley, in their interview with 60 minutes, gives a lose definition, but it’s really up to YOU to decide what it means to you. Stop forcing your opinions on other people, it sure as hell doesn’t make them want to believe you.

My interpretation of the song is that he has just died, and is now in hell, and the lyrics are discussing that he cannot reverse his fate or come back from death

I always thought that this song was about how a man goes to jail but refers to it as a hotel to escape reality.

Yeah, I agree that everyone can make their own meaning to songs. But I just wanted to point out that the satanism thing is just urban legend or something along those lines.
And I’m not just saying it based on my own interpretation. Just take a look at some interviews with Henley or Felder.
“…it’s basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about.” - Don Henley

Hey Sandolainen Not saying i agree with the satan thing but music is a form of art and llike any form of art the viewer/listener of it is suppose to have their own opinion about it if thats what they think the song is about then so be it who the hell gives you the right to say otherwise

This has nothing to do with devil worship (which isn’t the same as satanism, but that’s a whole other discussion). It’s their artistic expression of their dreams when starting in the music business in the 70’s as well as how the lifestyle wasn’t all as good as it seemed.
